SDASM Receives Donation from Long-time Volunteer

Miles and "friends" by his Luscombe 8E at Gibbs Airport, San Diego in 1947.

With a heavy heart we must announce that one of our volunteers, Miles Blaine, passed away on March 10, 2009. For those of you who didn't know Miles, he was one of the friendliest, funniest and most knowledgeable people to ever grace SDASM with his presence. Miles was a member of the first graduating class from Hoover High School in 1932. After that, he worked for many years as an aviation mechanic at North Island.

Miles was an avid pilot and photographer, and flew until he was 90 years old! He worked for over two decades at SDASM, were he developed thousands of photos in his own dark room. He was an expert on all types of aircraft, and when a photo surfaced with an unknown aircraft model, he was the first person asked to identify it. Well into his 90's, he volunteered in the Library & Archives until a few months ago, doing what he loved, looking at and talking about airplanes.

After his death, SDASM was proud to accept Miles' aviation library, consisting of hundreds of books and thousands of photos. Many of the photos are extremely unique images which were taken by Miles in San Diego and focus on famous aviation personalities and events. This collection not only documents eighty years of local flying, but the life of one truly outstanding man.
