Plaza de Panama Project

Dear Members and Friends of the San Diego Air & Space Museum,

On behalf of the Museum and the other cultural institutions in Balboa Park,  I’m asking for you to express your views, pro or con, on two issues up for consideration at the July 19, 2011 San Diego City Council meeting.

The first issue involves closing the Cabrillo Bridge as an experiment to see the effect on the Park attendance and the cultural institutions. We know that 40% of all Park visitors enter from the west and closing the Bridge would have an extremely negative effect on traffic flow through the Park. It may also deter people from visiting the Park all-together.

The second issue is the need for an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) of the Plaza de Panama project which would reroute cars through the park by way of a new bypass road and provide more parking as well as convert six acres of Park roadways for pedestrian use. We support the approval of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that would require the City of San Diego to conduct a review of the Plaza de Panama Committee’s plan and its alternatives. Approval of this MOU will not approve the project but will all the completion of studies necessary to understand the environmental effects of the proposed changes including a thorough assessment of the Park’s complicated traffic patterns.

We encourage you to learn more about these issues and to express your feelings to your local Council Member.

Contact information for each of the council members is provided below for your convenience.

Please do your part by letting your Council Member know your thoughts on these matters. I believe that a no vote on closing the Cabrillo Bridge and a yes vote to approve the environmental review of the Plaza de Panama Project are crucial to the future of Balboa Park and the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Thank you for your continued support of The San Diego Air & Space Museum and we look forward to seeing you soon!
